"Is anyone thirsty? Come!
Come, all who will,
Come and drink freely
of the Water of Life!"
Revelation 22:17
The History of Belfast United Methodist Church
The year was 1838. A group of Chistian believers called Methodist's were holding meethings in a barn on what is now called Chapel Street in the town of Belfast.
Ten years later in 1848 the group had grown large enough and prosperous enough to erect a large building at a cost of 1500 dollars, at the same location of the present building today.
This building was used until the year 1901. At this time the building was completely remodeled and additions made as we know it today. The timber frame of the orginal building is still within the building today but the interior was completely redesigned. Except for minor changes over the years the interior looks much the same as it did in 1902.
The beautiful windows are now pretected by storm windows. Insulation saves heat which is now provided by a gas furnace instead of wood so everyone is much more comfortable. The lighting is greatly improved, the basement has been refurbished, a rest room has been installed, the Session Room has been completely refurbished, after having been divided into Sunday School rooms for a number of years. The Sound System has also been updated.
The biggest building project undertaking by this church since its inception was the construction of the Family Center in the lot at the rear of the church, part of which was occupied by the horse and buggy sheds of many years ago.
The Family Center was built under the leadership of Paster Lee Carlson who served the church from 1992-98.
This church has seen many peaks and valleys over the years. With the faith and commitment of our member and the leadership of our pastors we will continue to move forward in the service of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. --Written by: Charles R. Gordon
